Robert A. Levine

Robert A. Levine is the founder, CEO and president of RAL. Since the beginning in 1982, Mr. Levine has grown the firm to include five affiliate companies and a skilled staff. RAL coordinates and oversees every facet of the development of luxury residential, resort and commercial properties nationwide, from financing and design to construction and property management.

A renowned developer and graduate Planner/Architect, Mr. Levine has been responsible for the development of more than 100 luxury residential, hotel and mixed-use projects throughout the country totaling in the hundreds of millions of dollars in project valuations.

Mr. Levine attended the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture and Art where he attained his degrees in Architectural Design Community and Urban Planning, with a specialty in physical design.

In 2008 he was the recipient of the Chairman's Award for the New York Landmarks Conservancy.

Mr. Levine is currently a board member of Brooklyn Greenway Initiative and Governors Island Alliance and Partnership for New York City.

Robert is married and has six grandchildren.

Vincent Cangelosi

Vince has helped shape RAL’s aesthetic identity for over twenty years. His expertise in innovative design and knowledge of construction technologies has resulted in universally successful developments in the highly competitive New York market and throughout the country. Through his long tenure at RAL Companies, Vince has directed both the design and marketing efforts of millions of square feet spanning a broad range of development types. His portfolio of work includes new and adaptive reuse residential communities, large resort properties, private residences as well as regional retail centers.

Vince also heads CDA, the architectural firm affiliated with RAL Companies, and received his formal training at the City College of New York School of Architecture. His education also includes studies in Urban Planning and Preservation in association with the Polytechnic Institute of Milan, Italy.

Vince is a practicing architect and member of the American Institute of Architects and maintains active registration in several jurisdictions.

Stuart Taft

Since joining RAL in 2001, Mr. Taft has been responsible for the acquisition of properties, joint ventures and development agreements totaling over 4.5 million square feet, and for financing transactions totaling more than $1.8 billion dollars. He is responsible for the review and analysis of potential development opportunities, site acquisition analysis, financial modeling, deal structure, transaction finance and the negotiation of operating agreements and joint ventures.

Mr. Taft has over 30 years of real estate experience including prior positions as Director of Real Estate Development for the NASDAQ listed web-hosting company Globix Corporation, Vice President of Real Estate Portfolio Management for The Chase Manhattan Bank, Retail Property Manager for The Rouse Organization at South Street Seaport and Real Estate Associate for the Investment and Merchant Banking Group of The Tribeca Corporation.

He holds a master's degree in Real Estate Investment and Development from New York University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the State University of New York at Albany. Mr. Taft is also a licensed real estate broker in New York.

Spencer Levine

Spencer Levine is a senior project manager at R.A.L Companies & Affiliates, where he is responsible for landscape and architectural design, construction management, and project management. He also serves as director of landscape architecture at Creative Design Associates (CDA), and vice president at Site Development Associates, a site planning and urban landscape design and installation firm.

Spencer has been responsible for the project management and coordination of more than two million square feet of mixed-use space including residential, commercial and hospitality properties in addition to more than 30 acres of commercial landscape design in the form of rooftops and common areas. In his role at CDA and Site Development, he has been involved in the master planning, urban design, landscape design and installation of large land areas totaling over 250 acres.

Spencer has served as the principal project manager and owners representative for the Resort at Cayo Largo, a 600 acre development including a substantial ultra luxury hotel and associated facilities.

Spencer also oversees CDA’s municipal project portfolio, including the $15.5 million renovation and revitalization of the 7.5-acre Parkwood Sports Complex of the Great Neck Park District of Long Island, NY, the master planning, sequencing and renovation of the Great Neck Village Green and other civic design projects.

Spencer holds a masters degree in landscape architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where his concentration was in urban planning and public park design. Additionally, his studies concentrated on public-private development, design law and public policy, ecological design and storm water management.

Spencer’s undergraduate studies were at Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences where he received a Bachelor of Science degree, magna cum laude, in landscape architecture with distinction in research honors. Spencer’s studies at Cornell included a concentration in construction documentation, specification, and management.

Spencer currently holds a license in landscape architecture in Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

Ken Gelman

Ken Gelman is the Comptroller at R.A.L. Companies and Affiliates and The Spandrel Group, where his responsibilities include accounting and operational oversight for each operating company within the R.A.L. and Spandrel Group network.

Ken joined R.A.L. in 2004 after spending eight years as vice president at The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., where he was in charge of equipment purchasing and maintenance. Prior to that, he worked at Victory Markets and was responsible for the maintenance of all company stores and facilities as well as oversight of government programs including Lottery, WIC, Food Stamp and Liquor licensing.

Earlier in his career, Ken spent 25 years at Waldbaum Supermarkets on Long Island. He was director of accounting administration in 1986 when the company was sold to The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. Ken was first retained to oversee the conversion of information and accounting records and then named Director of Facilities.

Ken attended Farleigh Dickinson University. He is a licensed instrument pilot, enjoys skiing and traveling. Ken served six years with the New Jersey National Guard and was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Valerie Kirsten

Valerie Kirsten is a Project Architect and Project Manager at RAL Companies and Affiliates, LLC. With over 15 years of experience in the design and construction industry, Valerie directs projects from conception to completion, applying her technical knowledge and interpersonal skills to the thoughtful planning, design, documentation, construction oversight and management of diverse project types.

In addition to practicing Architecture for most of her career, Valerie spent several years as a Construction Project Engineer and Estimator, gaining valuable field experience and perspective on the construction side of the industry. Her range of experience makes her a skilled communicator with team members throughout the process. She can speak the language of owners, designers and contractors alike, and has successfully coordinated project teams on a variety of project types. The breadth of her project experience includes internet startups, corporate interiors, commercial, healthcare, luxury hospitality and multifamily residential developments.

Valerie received her Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Princeton University. She is a licensed Architect in the State of Colorado and a LEED accredited professional.

Joshua Wein

Joshua Wein is the Financial Director at R.A.L Companies & Affiliates, where he is responsible for property acquisitions, site valuation, financial modeling, and monitoring and managing project expenses. He is also involved in the planning of RAL’s web-based marketing efforts and other innovative marketing campaigns.

Since joining R.A.L. in 2006, Josh has been involved in the underwriting, financing, and requisition process for over two million square feet of development throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. He collaborates intimately with R.A.L.’s architectural team to develop projects that are thoughtfully designed from both a planning and financial perspective. He is involved in the business and financing structure of ongoing developments and is responsible for interfacing with investors and lenders on new and existing properties.

Prior to joining R.A.L., Josh founded and eventually sold two companies—Spiral Software Systems and Devani Gem Corporation. As President of Spiral Software, Josh designed and developed educational management software for K-12 schools, managed the company’s accounts and funds, and handled everyday operations. The award winning venture earned him one of the top prizes in the Panasci Business Plan Competition for Entrepreneurs.

Originally from Great Neck, Long Island, Josh graduated from Syracuse University where he majored in Information Technology and Management and minored in Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises. He received a professional certificate from New York University in Real Estate Finance & Investments and is also a New York State licensed real estate broker.

Jerry Gallo

Mr. Gallo is Director of Architectural Services at CDA, an architectural affiliate of RAL. He oversees architectural production, manages staff, and assists in the design and development of new projects.

Since joining in 1999 as a junior architect, Mr. Gallo has taken on increasingly complex assignments, including the one million square foot residential conversion, One Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Mr. Gallo brings experience from small architectural firms specializing in luxury residential renovations and new construction in both Long Island and New York City. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the New York Institute of Technology.

Raúl Colón

Raúl Colón joined RAL Companies and Affiliates as a senior project manager in 2013. Raúl is a professional civil engineer in Puerto Rico as well as a dynamic entrepreneur and experienced construction professional with a unique combination of technical expertise, managerial experience and business leadership. His primary role at RAL is managing the development process for a large hotel development in Puerto Rico. Aside from his day to day coordination activities, Raul’s responsibilities include making projections, and ensuring that budgets are adhered to and deadlines are met.

Raúl has over 35 years of experience in the construction industry. Prior to joining RAL, Raúl was president and owner of Probuilders, SE and Tech Developers, Inc. where he oversaw the construction of various hospitality, industrial and commercial buildings. One of which was Caribe Plaza, a 6 story, 60,000sf, LEED Silver Certified commercial building. It was awarded the “Environmental Project of the year” from the CIAPR in 2009. Throughout his career he has proven to be a strong professional leader with excellent planning and organizational skills.

Raúl attended Texas Tech University, in Lubbock, Texas and received a Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering. He won the U.S. Small Business Administrator’s Award for Excellence as well as a U.S. Army certificate of Merit for Safety. Raúl is also a member of the College of Engineer’s and Surveyors of Puerto Rico as well as a member of the USGBC.

David B. Sorenson

David B. Sorenson, AIA, is an architectural project manager at RAL. David has over 18 years of experience in architecture and development, most recently as project manager working at the Four Seasons in Vail, Colorado. In addition to playing a key role in the successful completion and opening of the resort, David has continued to be effective as project architect and project manager for several projects in the operating hotel as well as on similar projects in Atlanta, GA and Puerto Rico.

Prior to joining RAL , David was a project architect and project manager at the Ivins Design Group in Colorado where he worked on large-scale projects such as a 12-story hotel in downtown Denver, Capella Telluride in Telluride, and the Golden Gates and Mardi Gras Casinos in Black Hawk. Earlier in his career, David was a project manager at Keith Kennedy Architecture in Idaho where he managed the development of several commercial and residential buildings from conception through completion.

The NCARB-certified architect holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Kansas State University. He is currently licensed in Idaho, Colorado, New York, Florida, and Puerto Rico and is an active member of the American Institute of Architects.

James C. Thalman

Mr. Thalman's hospitality management and consulting career has spanned over four decades since earning his hotel degree from Michigan State University's School of Hospitality Business. Assignments have included general management, asset management and consulting in urban, suburban/airport, commercial/convention and resort locations, including both upscale and luxury quality levels.

Recent projects include luxury hotel and boutique hotel destination resorts in Colorado, a luxury destination spa hotel in Miami Beach and an upscale suburban/airport hotel project in New Jersey. All recent properties had substantial residential & commercial condominium components in addition to lodging operations.

Analysis provided in Mr. Thalman's consulting assignments includes review of sales and marketing plans for operations, operating budgets, financial statement performance and analysis, organization and personnel reviews, competitive set analysis and asset inspection with CapEx plan reviews/recommendations.
